4. It will take some time for BitLocker to initialise your flash drive. Check the checkbox corresponding with the appropriate option that you want to use to encrypt flash drive. Click Next to continue.

5. Select the destination to save your recovery key. Click Next.

Note: Make sure you save it somewhere secure because it is basically the backup key that you can use to access your flash drive in case you forget your password or lose your smart card.

6. The Choose how much of your drive to encrypt window will appear and select the Encrypt used disk space only (faster and best for new PCs and drives) before clicking Next.

7. Click Start encrypting.

8. The BitLocker Drive Encryption progression window will pop up so that you know how long you need to wait for the process performed on an unencrypt USB flash drive.

This way, if you have a well-functioning flash drive, you will not need to get a new one just because you need to upgrade your security.

Option 3: Use a free desktop encryption software

Unlike BitLocker, there are plenty of open-source encryption software available for you to use. This is particularly useful if you want to only be able to access an encrypted flash drive on a specific computer. This may be less useful, but it would be more secure because you would need two devices to access data in the flash drive.
